Getting Ready: Up on the Rooftop Mystery Quilt Along

A Festive Start to Holiday Sewing

The Up on the Rooftop Mystery Quilt Along is almost here, and I’m excited to start this cheerful project alongside Fat Quarter Shop and so many of you.

Beginning in July, we’ll be sewing one block each week for five weeks. Each pattern and video tutorial will be released on Tuesdays, and all blocks are free. The final quilt finishes at 46 ½" x 47 ½", just the right size for a seasonal wall hanging or lap quilt.

This quilt is designed to be fun and accessible, with festive details and clean, bold shapes. It’s a great way to enjoy summer sewing while creating something to treasure for the holidays ahead.

What You’ll Need

To get started, download the fabric requirements and make sure you have the basics on hand:

  • A variety of prints for blocks and accents
  • Background fabric
  • Coordinating binding and backing

You can follow the original sample fabrics, or pull from your stash to make it your own. Scrappy reds and greens, warm creams, or even icy winter tones would all look beautiful in this layout.

A Few Tips Before We Begin

  • Cut and label pieces ahead of time to make weekly sewing smoother.
  • Starch your fabrics if you plan to use small pieces or bias seams.
  • Set aside one day each week (like Tuesday or midweek) to check in and sew your block at a steady pace.
