RBD Block Challenge 2026 β Block 10: Plus One
It feels exciting to reach Week 10 of the RBD Block Challenge. By this point the quilt is really starting to come together, and it has been enjoyable to see how each block adds something new. This week’s design, Plus One by Amber Elliott, has a clean, modern look that was enjoyable to sew using prints from my Thimbelina fabric collection.
Plus One comes together with simple shapes that form a crisp cross in the center. The piecing is approachable, and the block looks tidy and structured once pressed. I enjoyed choosing fabrics for this layout and seeing how the design shifted depending on which prints were placed in the center or outer edges.
Block 10: Plus One
Plus One finishes at 10 inches by 10 inches and uses rectangles and stitch and flip corners to build the design. Amber created the block so the shape appears clearly without complicated piecing, which makes it a great fit for Week 10 when everyone is settling into the flow of the challenge.
Sew With Me
Here is how I approached my Thimbelina version of Plus One.
Fabric Choices:
I chose prints with enough value difference so the plus shape would stand out cleanly. Even subtle shifts in tone helped the block read well.
Placement:
Before sewing, I arranged the units a few different ways to see how the plus shape looked with each combination. A small change in placement made the block feel more balanced.
A Hand Stitched Detail:
I added a small line of hand stitching around the center cross before quilting. It is just a simple echo in coordinating Aurifil floss, but it gives the block a soft outline and a bit of texture without drawing attention away from the piecing.
Sharing Tips:
- Trim stitch and flip corners carefully to keep the shapes crisp.
- Press during each step to help the plus shape stay defined.
- Lay out the full block before joining to check how the colors work together.
