RBD Block Challenge 2026 β Block 13: Patchwork Star
Week 13 of the RBD Block Challenge brings us Patchwork Star by Liza Taylor @lizataylorhandmade. This block has such a classic feel, and I loved how the patchwork details build into a bold star shape.
After last week’s scenic design, it was really nice to return to a more traditional star block. The mix of four-patch units and half square triangles creates a beautiful balance of structure and movement, and it was especially fun to see how the Thimbelina prints played within each section.
Block 13: Patchwork Star
Patchwork Star finishes at 10 inches by 10 inches and combines simple piecing techniques like four-patch units and half square triangles to create a strong star design. The layout comes together in sections, making it easy to follow while still feeling detailed and thoughtful.

Here is how I approached my Thimbelina version of Patchwork Star.
Fabric Choices:
I focused on choosing fabrics that would clearly separate the star from the background. Using a slightly stronger contrast helped the star shape stand out while still keeping everything soft and cohesive.
Breaking It Into Steps:
This block comes together in stages, and I found it helpful to think of it in smaller sections. Sewing the four-patch units first made the rest of the layout feel much more manageable.
A Hand Stitched Detail:
For this block, I added a few simple stitches along the star points. It gave just a touch of texture and helped highlight the shape without adding too much.
Sharing Tips:
Press your seams carefully when making the four-patch units so they nest nicely.
Lay out your full block before sewing the final seams to double check your star placement.
Take your time trimming your half square triangles so everything lines up cleanly.
