RBD Block Challenge 2026 β Block 2: Spin Around
There is something comforting about settling into Week 2 of the RBD Block Challenge. With the first block behind us, this week brings a nice sense of familiarity. For this year’s challenge, I am sewing each block using prints from my Thimbelina fabric collection. It has been fun to see how the fabrics take on a new look with every design.
This week’s block, Spin Around, was designed by Amy Smart (@diaryofaquilter). The rotation in this block is created through simple stitch and flip units, and it comes together in a way that feels clean and satisfying. Once the four units were finished and arranged, the spin became clear right away.
Sewing Spin Around reminded me how enjoyable it can be to work with smaller pieces. Each unit builds on the last, and it was interesting to see how the prints interacted as the block took shape.
Block 2: Spin Around
Spin Around finishes at 10 inches by 10 inches and uses rectangles paired with stitch and flip corners to form the rotating design. Amy’s layout gives you flexibility with color placement. You can use contrast to highlight the movement or choose prints that blend more gently. It is a simple block to construct, which makes it a great choice for Week 2 when everyone is finding their pace in the challenge.
Sew With Me
Here is how I approached my Thimbelina version of Spin Around.
Fabric Choices: I chose prints with enough difference in value so the spin would read clearly once the units were sewn together.
Placement: Before joining the units, I laid out all four quadrants to confirm the direction of the spin. It only takes a moment and it helps the final block look intentional.
A Hand Stitched Detail
I added a small echo line of hand stitching to this block using Aurifil embroidery floss. A few simple stitches about a quarter inch from the edge give the block a soft outline and add a little texture that shows through nicely after quilting.
Sharing Tips:
- When trimming your stitch and flip corners, trim cleanly so the rectangles keep their shape.
- Take your time pressing. A well pressed block helps the spin look smooth.
- Check orientation before final assembly to be sure the spin is moving in the direction you want.
