RBD Block Challenge 2026 β Block 4: Ribbon Star
It has been nice settling into the flow of the RBD Block Challenge, and this week brings a block that feels both classic and cheerful. For Block 4, we are sewing Ribbon Star by my dear friend Fran Gulick. I always enjoy Fran’s designs because they are approachable and look polished once they are finished. This block came together smoothly, and it was fun to see how the Thimbelina prints worked within the star points.
Ribbon Star uses simple units that create a clean, bold shape. The block looks more detailed than it actually is, which makes it a great choice for beginners or for anyone who enjoys a block that feels rewarding without being fussy. I appreciated how quickly the sections came together and how the final shape stood out once everything was pressed.
Block 4: Ribbon Star
Ribbon Star finishes at 10 inches by 10 inches and is made with squares, rectangles, and stitch and flip corners. Fran designed the layout so the star feels crisp and balanced. The block gives you flexibility with fabric placement, whether you want the star to stand out with contrast or blend softly into the background.
Sew With Me
Here is how I approached my Thimbelina version of Ribbon Star.
Fabric Choices: I chose prints with enough value difference so the star points would show clearly.
Placement: Before sewing, I laid out the units to be sure the prints flowed well from point to point.
A Hand Stitched Detail: I added a simple hand stitched echo around the star using Aurifil embroidery floss. Stitching about a quarter inch from the seams gave the points a clean outline and added a bit of texture to the block. The stitching blends in softly once quilted and gives the design a slightly more finished feel.
Sharing Tips:
- Trim stitch and flip corners carefully to keep your points sharp.
- Press each step as you go so the seams stay flat.
- Test your layout before joining the final units to keep the star shape even.

More About This Fabric Collection
If you enjoy sewing with Thimbelina, you may also enjoy the Thimbelina Felt Panel. This printed felt panel includes dolls, woodland animals, accessories, and a house-shaped play bag. It is a fun way to introduce simple sewing skills or encourage creative play. The pieces are easy to cut and sew, and the finished bag doubles as both a playmat and storage pouch.
