RBD Block Challenge 2026 β Block 5: Ombre Dash
Reaching Week 5 of the RBD Block Challenge feels exciting because the quilt is starting to take shape. It has been enjoyable to see the first four blocks develop and to choose new Thimbelina prints for each design. This week’s block, Ombre Dash, was designed by my dear friend Beverly McCullough @flamingotoes. Bev always creates designs that feel fun and approachable, and this block fits that style well.
Ombre Dash is a simple block with a playful look. The color placement is what brings the design to life, and it was interesting to see how the block changed depending on which fabrics I placed at the center and outer edges. The block uses rectangles and stitch and flip corners, and the construction came together smoothly.
I enjoyed sewing this one and watching the ombre effect show as the pieces were pressed. It was a nice change of pace and a great block to personalize with your favorite prints.
Block 5: Ombre Dash
Ombre Dash finishes at 10 inches by 10 inches and is made with rectangles and simple stitch and flip units. Beverly designed it so the movement forms through shifting color values. You can create a soft transition or a more bold variation depending on your fabric choices.
This block is beginner friendly and a nice way to try simple color placement without any complicated piecing.
Sew With Me
Here is how I approached my Thimbelina version of Ombre Dash.
Fabric Choices: I picked prints that would show a clear shift from light to dark. Even a small change in value can create the effect.
Placement: I laid out the rectangles ahead of time to check the direction of the ombre and to be sure the center panel was balanced.
A Hand Stitched Detail: To finish this block, I added a light hand stitched echo about a quarter inch around the design using Aurifil embroidery floss. It gives the ombre layout a soft frame and adds a little texture that shows through nicely once the quilting is done.
Sharing Tips:
- Trim stitch and flip corners carefully so the rectangles stay even.
- If you want a strong ombre, choose three fabrics that vary in depth.
- Take a moment to press each step. A smooth seam helps the ombre look clean.
