RBD Block Challenge 2026 β Block 6: Square Knot
Reaching Week 6 of the RBD Block Challenge is exciting because this week I get to share a block that I designed, Square Knot. It is always special to see a design move from a sketch to something that can be sewn and interpreted in so many different ways. I have enjoyed watching the challenge grow and was looking forward to sewing this version using my Thimbelina fabric collection.
Square Knot is built from simple shapes that create a woven look once they are arranged. It came together smoothly, and I enjoyed watching the knot form as each seam was pressed. It is a block that looks a little more detailed than it feels to sew, which makes it a nice fit for the middle of the challenge.
Block 6: Square Knot
Square Knot finishes at 10 inches by 10 inches and uses squares and rectangles arranged to create the overlapping knot effect. It is beginner friendly and a good option for anyone who likes blocks that are tidy and structured without complicated piecing.
Sew With Me
Here is how I approached my Thimbelina version of Square Knot.
Fabric Choices: I chose prints that gave the knot enough contrast to stand out clearly once the block was pressed.
Placement: Before sewing, I laid out each section to be sure the woven look read the way I wanted. Even small changes in placement can shift the direction of the knot.
A Hand Stitched Detail:
I like adding a small bit of hand stitching to my challenge blocks before they are quilted. For this block, I added a simple echo line about a quarter inch around the design using Aurifil embroidery floss. I used three strands in a coordinating color so the outline stays soft and blends into the block. It gives the piecing a gentle layer of texture, and I like how the hand stitching shows through lightly once the block is quilted over. It adds a warm, handmade touch without taking away from the overall design.
Sharing Tips:
- Keep your seams straight on the longer rectangles to help the knot lines stay clean.
- Press each step so the block stays flat and even.
- For a more defined knot, choose fabrics with clear value differences.
