RBD Block Challenge 2026 β Block 7: Tulip Toss
Reaching Week 7 of the RBD Block Challenge feels encouraging because the quilt is starting to take shape. This week’s block, Tulip Toss, was designed by Christopher Thompson @the_tattooed_quilter. The design has a clean, modern look that still feels playful, and it was enjoyable to piece using prints from my Thimbelina fabric collection.
Tulip Toss comes together with simple units that form a flower shape once the pieces are joined. It has a nice balance of structure and openness, which makes it a block that works well with many different fabrics. I enjoyed seeing how the Thimbelina prints filled the petal shapes and how the block brightened once everything was pressed.
Block 7: Tulip Toss
Tulip Toss finishes at 10 inches by 10 inches and uses squares, rectangles, and a few stitch and flip corners to build the flower shape. Christopher designed the block to feel light and tidy. It is simple to assemble, and the final shape appears clearly as soon as the units come together.
Sew With Me
Here is how I approached my Thimbelina version of Tulip Toss.
Fabric Choices:
I chose prints that gave the petals a gentle contrast so the tulip shape would stand out clearly without overpowering the block.
Placement:
I laid out the petal units before sewing to check how the colors balanced in the final shape. Small adjustments in placement made the flower read more smoothly.
A Hand Stitched Detail:
For this block, I added a hand stitched echo line about a quarter inch around the tulip using Aurifil embroidery floss. I used three strands in a coordinating color so the outline stayed soft. The stitching adds a little texture and frames the flower in a simple, handmade way that shows through nicely once it is quilted.
Sharing Tips:
- Trim stitch and flip corners carefully so the petal points stay sharp.
- Press after each step to keep the block flat and tidy.
- Test your layout before joining the final pieces to be sure the tulip shape looks balanced.
