Spoolful of Charm QAL: Week 2 Cutting and Fussy Cutting

Welcome to Week 2 of the Spoolful of Charm Quilt Along. This week we move into cutting our fabrics and preparing the pieces that will become each spool block. Cutting is an important step, and taking a little time to be accurate will help the rest of the project feel smooth.

If you are fussy cutting your centers, enjoy choosing the prints you want to highlight in each spool. This is where the personality of your quilt begins to shine through.

This Week’s Focus: Cutting and Fussy Cutting

1. Cut the Spool Pieces

Follow the cutting chart in the pattern to cut the background pieces, spool frames, and block components. Press your fabrics before cutting to keep everything crisp and easy to measure.

2. Prepare Your Centers

If you are fussy cutting, use a clear ruler to frame the design before cutting. Small artwork and simple motifs work especially well in the spool centers.

3. Keep Pieces Organized

You may want to keep each block’s pieces together in small piles or envelopes. This helps you stay organized when assembling the spools in Week 3.

4. Check Your Measurements

Accurate cutting means smooth seams later on. Take your time and enjoy this step.
