Spoolful of Charm QAL: Week 3

Welcome to Week 3 of the Spoolful of Charm Quilt Along. This is the week when your quilt begins to take real shape. You have chosen your fabrics and prepared your pieces, and now each block will come together into the classic spool design that makes this project so charming.

Sewing the spools is an enjoyable process. The block is constructed with simple units, and each part frames your selected artwork or print in a sweet and balanced way. With careful pressing and a steady pace, you will create blocks that lay flat and fit beautifully into the Week 4 assembly.

This Week’s Focus: Sewing the Spool Blocks

1. Sew the Frame Around Your Center

Begin by adding the side frame strips to your spool center block. Align your raw edges, keep your seam allowance consistent, and press after each seam.

Tip:
Press the seams away from the center if possible. This helps the frame sit evenly and gives your block a crisp look.

2. Attach the Top and Bottom Spool Edges

After your frame is complete, add the top and bottom edges to finish the spool shape. These pieces complete the visual look of thread wrapped around a spool.

Tip:
If your prints have a directional pattern, take a moment to check the orientation before stitching. This keeps the block feeling balanced.

3. Check the Block Size

Once the block is assembled, give it a gentle press and measure the finished size. Accurate trimming at this stage helps your quilt top fit together smoothly next week.

Tip:
Do not trim off more than needed. If your block is slightly large, a light trim is fine. If it is slightly small, press again to settle the seams.

4. Build a Block Layout

As your blocks begin to pile up, lay them out on a table or design wall. Seeing the colors and fussy cut centers together helps you plan the overall quilt layout, and it brings a lot of joy to the process.

Helpful Tips for Week 3

Use Chain Piecing for Faster Sewing

Chain piecing the same units across several blocks can save time and keep your rhythm steady. It also helps ensure that all pieces match in construction.

Focus on Seam Consistency

A steady quarter inch seam allowance is the key to blocks that fit together easily. If needed, use a seam guide on your machine.

Press in Steps, Not All at Once

Pressing after each seam makes a noticeable difference in how crisp the blocks look. It also prevents hidden folds that can throw off your measurements later.

Enjoy the Process

This week is one of the most rewarding parts of the quilt along. Seeing each spool appear is a reminder of why quilting is such a thoughtful and creative craft.
