Stitch the Garden Spools Quilt

There’s something refreshing about a quilt that plays with color, rhythm, and simplicity all at once. The Garden Spools Quilt is one of those designs. It gives you a strong structure to build on, while still leaving plenty of room to explore your favorite prints and palettes.

This is the featured quilt inside the Pattern Club this month, and I had so much fun designing it with balance, movement, and fabric play in mind.

One Block, Bold Results

The Garden Spools Quilt is made from a single repeated block that mimics the shape of stacked spools. It’s beginner-friendly and easy to cut, making it a great pattern to sew steadily through the season.

Each block uses a center print, a pair of “thread” strips, and background fabric. You can keep all your spools the same or mix them up with florals, tone-on-tones, and solids. The final layout is bold and modern, but still soft enough for any space.

Fabric Notes

I stitched my sample using the Thimbelina collection by Jennifer Long for Riley Blake Designs. It includes plenty of small-scale prints, blenders, and florals that play nicely together without feeling too busy.

You can also add coordinating solids, use low-volume backgrounds, or fussy cut your centers if you want to spotlight a special motif. This pattern is flexible and can work with nearly any fabric style.

Recommended Supplies

Here’s what I used to sew the quilt:

  • Fabric: Thimbelina collection by Jennifer Long for Riley Blake Designs
  • Interfacing and Pressing Tools: HeatnBond products from ThermoWeb
  • Thread and Batting: Your preferred brand
  • Tools: Rotary cutter, acrylic ruler, iron, sewing machine, pins or clips

You’ll find a full cutting guide and layout diagram inside the pattern.

Bonus: Thread Match Bingo

This month’s Pattern Club quilt also comes with a printable bonus: Thread Match Bingo.

It’s a fun, color-themed game that turns your extra fabric prints into a quilt-inspired activity. You can play with children, bring it to a guild meeting, or save it for holiday gatherings.

Just print the bingo cards, cut a few small squares of fabric, and you’re ready to play.
