Up on the Rooftop Mystery Quilt Along – Week 1

Let’s Sew the Ho Ho Holiday Block

The mystery begins today! We’re kicking off the Up on the Rooftop Quilt Along with a cheerful row of pieced letters that spell out a festive “Ho Ho Ho.” This oversized block is a fun start to the quilt and sets the tone for the whimsical story that unfolds each week.

Each letter is made using basic rectangles and squares, and the layout is designed to guide your eye straight through the holiday greeting. Even with simple shapes, accuracy matters, so take a little time this week to check your cutting and seam allowance before assembly.

Tips for Success

  • Chain piece where you can. Many of the letter units repeat, so batch sewing will speed things up.
  • Press carefully. Pay special attention to the direction of your seam allowances, this helps everything nest nicely and line up in the final block.
  • Square as you go. Double-check unit sizes before sewing the next section together to keep your finished block crisp and accurate.

You’ll build the letters H and O in different combinations, then arrange them to complete the Ho Ho Holiday Block. When finished, your block will measure 10 1/2” x 40 1/2” (unfinished).
